The Velocity Trap: Faster treadmills won’t grant you Long-Term Leverage
We are currently living through the greatest illusion of speed in industrial history.
The narrative dominating the technology sector right now is one of unrestrained acceleration.
We look at the newest wave of generative AI tools and we see miracles of efficiency. We see developers generating boilerplate code in seconds rather than hours. We see founders drafting comprehensive go-to-market strategies over a morning coffee instead of a week-long offsite. We see marketing teams producing months’ worth of copy in an afternoon.
The immediate, visceral reaction to this is euphoria. It feels like a cheat code. It feels like we have finally broken the shackles of linear time constraints that have bound business operations since the industrial revolution.
But if you look closely at the physics of these workflows; if you strip away the hype and analyze the structural mechanics of how this work is actually being produced and integrated into an organization; you will realize something unsettling.
We are confusing acceleration with leverage.
We haven’t discovered a new form of propulsion. We have simply built a much, much faster treadmill. And if we are not careful, the only result of this revolution will be exhaustion at scale.
The Physics of Assisted Linear Effort
To understand why current AI implementations fail to deliver true organizational leverage, we have to look at the input/output equation.
For decades, knowledge work operated on a strict 1:1 ratio.
→ Input: One hour of engineering effort.
→ Output: One unit of feature development.
→ Input: One new hire in customer success.
→ Output: One specific unit of added account coverage capacity.
This is linear architecture. Growth is achieved through brute force addition.
To get 10x output, you need 10x input (money, people, hours). This architecture is inherently fragile because as you add inputs, you also add entropy; communication overhead, coordination drag, and complexity. Eventually, the gravity of the organization exceeds its lift, and growth stagnates.
The promise of AI was to break this linear dependency. But look at how 99% of companies are currently deploying these tools.

The AI generates a block of code.
The human reviews the code for hallucinations, security flaws, or context mismatch.
The human integrates that code into the broader codebase.
What is the actual geometry of this workflow? It is still Assisted Linear.
→ Input: 1 Human Trigger.
→ Output: 1 AI Result.
Certainly, the slope of the line has changed dramatically. The “m” in y=mx+b is steeper than it has ever been. We are getting more “y” for every second of “x.” But the fundamental geometry hasn’t shifted. You are still trapped in a direct dependency chain.
The human is the pilot light. If the human stops prompting, the output drops to zero. If the human gets sick, takes a vacation, or burns out from the cognitive load of reviewing 10,000 lines of generated code a day, the system halts.
You haven’t built an engine that runs on its own thermal momentum. You are just running faster and faster to keep up with the machine you brought inside to help you.
The Copilot Fallacy and the Audit Tax
The industry has adopted the metaphor of the “Copilot” to describe these tools. It is an incredibly successful piece of marketing branding, but as an operational philosophy for enterprise scale, it is disastrous.
A copilot requires a pilot in the seat, hands near the controls, eyes scanning the horizon, constantly maintaining situational awareness. The pilot is not relieved of responsibility; their responsibility has shifted from actuation to supervision.
In the context of software development and business operations, this shift from “doing” to “supervising” is not the liberation it seems. It introduces a new, hidden form of organizational debt: The Audit Tax.
AI tools are phenomenal at generating plausible-sounding volume. They can flood an organization with drafted emails, proposed architectures, and sprawling codebases. But because these models are probabilistic, not deterministic, every output is essentially a “maybe.”
This shifts the cognitive load onto the human operators. Instead of spending four hours writing deeply considered code, a senior engineer now spends four hours reviewing twelve different AI-generated approaches, debugging subtle hallucinations, and trying to ensure that the accelerated output of junior developers doesn’t introduce catastrophic technical debt.
The bottleneck has simply moved. It moved from the creation of raw materials to the quality control and integration of those materials.
We are finding that supervising a hyper-fast probabilistic machine is often more mentally taxing than just doing the work linearly. The “Copilot” model doesn’t remove friction; it compresses it into intense bursts of high-stakes cognitive review. This is not scalable. It is a recipe for massive, accelerated mediocrity.
The Architectural Shift: From Execution to System Design
If we want to escape the gravity of linear scaling, we have to stop celebrating the speed at which we complete tasks. We have to change the nature of the tasks themselves.

This requires a fundamentally different skillset. It requires deep systems thinking. You cannot effectively design an autonomous loop if you don’t understand the nuances of the process you are automating. The idea that AI will allow people with no domain expertise to build complex systems is a dangerous fantasy. You need more domain expertise to architect a system than you do to execute a task within it.
If you are trading hours for dollars; even if those hours are highly leveraged by AI assistance; you aren’t building a technology business. You are managing a chaotic, high-speed job.

Kill the Treadmill
The intoxication of speed is dangerous. It masks structural rot. It allows us to feel productive while we are merely busy.
As leaders, we are facing a critical juncture. We can continue to buy faster treadmills, burned out our best people with the cognitive load of supervising probabilistic machines, and pat ourselves on the back for our “AI strategy” while our unit economics remain stubbornly linear.
Or, we can recognize the trap.
We can stop trying to run faster and start the difficult, boring, essential work of building a machine that runs without us.
The target is not “more work done faster.” The target is zero friction and infinite leverage.
